What is Orthokeratology ?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k)
non-surgical procedure using specially designed contact lenses to temporarily reshape the curvature of your cornea while asleep. You can see clearly the next day without your spectacle once you remove your ortho-k lens.

How does Ortho-k work ?

Ortho-k is actually a rigid gas permeable lens which is specially designed into a special curve that helps to gently create a water pressure that forms within the cornea surface when it is worn. The pressure will flatten the front surface of the cornea and that will help to refocus lights entering your eye properly. Hence, vision will be clear after removing the ortho-k lenses.

Aim of Orthokeratology ?

The aim for having ortho-k is to correct short-sighted & astigmatism so that you can Opt to have clear vision without need to depend on spectacles or contact lenses.

Secondly, it is to slow down progression of myopia.

Replacing the need to depend on spectacle or daily contact lens wear. With ortho-k provides more than just refractive correction, the main advantage is its ability to control myopia progression.

Is it safe ?

Ortho-k lenses are made from materials that FDA approves. It is similar to a contact lens , and it potentially carries the risk of contamination and causes infections.However the risk is very minimal if individuals follow proper cleaning regime, handling of the lenses and regular visits to optometrist.

How fast will I see results ?

The process treatment varies from case, individuals with higher level of refractive error may find themself needing more time ( weeks to a month ) in treatment to achieve best vision compared to lower refractive errors may sometimes see significant changes over the 1st night of wearing.

For the first 3 months of treatment, optometrist will schedule follow up sessions according to the progress of results and stability of lens fitting.

Once optimum vision is achieved with customized ortho-k lenses, you may continue with the regular ortho-k routine until your next replacement schedule.

Who are suitable for Orthokeratology lenses ?

Childrens from age 5 year old onwards who are facing high progression of myopia on yearly basis.

Individuals who are active in sports

Individuals who are short-sighted / myopic of refractive correction less than 7.00 diopters and astigmatism less than 2.50 diopters are quite effective with the treatments.

Those who are not suitable to undergo LASIK surgery and want to opt for spectacle or contact lens free vision.
